I’m always on the lookout for fun techniques to try with my paper crafting, and there are a lot of techniques out there. I know one Stampin’ UP! demo who did a year-long series on techniques posting a different one each week. It would be impossible to have tried them all but there was one I’ve been thinking about for a while and pulled out my sponges, ink and stamps to share with you today; Joseph’s Coat.

Joseph’s coat refers to the Bible story of Joseph’s coat of many colors. This technique certainly does that in spades. In order to do a Joseph’s coat project you will first need several colors of ink. In my opinion, bright vibrant colors work best. I chose 4 of the 2020-2022 In-Colors; Magenta Madness, Bumblebee, Just Jade, and Misty Moonlight
Joseph’s Coat – Step by step
Color a piece of basic white card stock with each of the colors using sponge daubers. I added lots of ink to be sure I had really good color coverage.

Selecting the right Stamp
Select a stamp that has a lot of coverage, not a stamp that is just an outline stamp as the color won’t show through. I selected the flower spray from Art Gallery as my focal point. I stamped the image using versamark and then heat embossed it with clear embossing powder.
HINT: Make sure your ink is very very dry before stamping and powdering. Mine wasn’t and as a result, I picked up stray speckles of embossing powder where I didn’t want it. Even after using my Embossing Buddy. I was able to correct it though in the next step.

Coloring the background
Once your paper is colored, stamped, and embossed, use a sponge dauber and color the entire piece with Memento black ink. Don’t use Stazon. You want all of the background to be black so the colored image shows through. In my case, because I had speckles of clear embossing where I didn’t want it I also went over the entire piece with my dark black Stampin’ Blend. The alcohol ink covers and sticks to the embossed areas.

To finish my project I didn’t want anything that would take away from all that color so I went very simple with just some ribbon and a stamped Happy Birthday from Happy Thoughts and punched with the Lovely Labels Punch.
