Welcome to InKing Royalty’s December Blog Hop! During this year’s blog hops, we are enjoying a year of celebrations. This month’s projects celebrate New Year’s Day, a special day to start anew and prepare for the coming year. We are excited to share our creations with you today! After you read my post, I hope you’ll hop over to the next person on the list at the base of this post.
Happy Birthday to Brian!
I don’t have a new year’s card but instead, I have a new Happy Birthday card for my leader Brian King. Today is his birthday as well as our hop day. I combined the two into a card celebrating birthdays, new years, new techniques, new ways to use your existing supplies, plus some new products coming in Jan 5.
While browsing Pinterest the other day I came across a stencil technique I hadn’t tried before, using your die as a stencil. In checking through my dies I landed on the Celebrate Sunflower as the one to experiment with and use as a stencil with watercolor pencils.
I chose a blue/green pallet rather than the traditional yellow for my sunflower to see how it looked this way. You’ll want both sets of watercolor pencils from Stampin’ UP! as both are inexpensive and last a long long time.
Each petal is colored with the pencil, first by simply outlining the color, then adding some to the center of each petal before using a Blender Pen to smooth the colored lines. Blender pens are my preferred tool when working with Watercolor Pencils. You can use water of course but I like the more vibrant color provided by the blender pen. After it dried I added some black lines with my black Stampin blend marker for added detail.
Another new product I’ve used today is the Many Messages Stamp/Die Bundle that has 19 sentiments on a single stamp that cut out individually with the Messages Die. I chose to use the “Hoping our day is full of …” sentiment, but look how many others from that one stamp could also be used here. This new stamp die bundle is a must have for quick ready to go sentiments in pretty shapes and sizes.
Check out all these sentiments from this one Stamp/die bundle. Well, all except for the one that flew into my coffee cup : )

A gorgeous card for any occasion! The watercolor technique is one I will have to try.
I hope you do give it a try Jackie. Super fun to play with.
Lovely card. Your water coloring is superb – it leaves a stained glass look. I like the colors you choose for a peaceful wintery card. Really pretty.
thank you Linda!
Awwww…I love how you combined the two epic celebrations, Lynn. 🙂 Such a great card with a super-fun technique. Love the sentiment in your coffee cup! 🙂
Thanks Brian. I just had to laugh when that sentiment landed in my cup. Just like anything else it landed ‘jelly side’ down so I have no idea what it said.
Those colors are just amazing and I love how they really pop against the background. You are the queen of color for sure! And your sentiment in the cup made me laugh!!!
awe thanks Pam. I’m not Jennifer Spiller but I try to emulate her every time I color
Absolutely beautiful, Lynn!
thanks Candy
Great card. Love the sentiment in the bottom of the cup. When I get ‘wild’ with my punching I have learned to move my coffee. It’s a thing! 🙂
thanks Ann. Yeah that coffee cup just ate that sentiment right up. I have no idea what it even said. : )
Lynn, Great idea for using our dies as stencils! You have inspired me to give it a try! Nice job!
I hope you do try. Don’t be afraid to create for the trash can once or twice until you get what you like.
Lynn – love your card and its subtle colors! I need to try this technique!
WOW! Great card with the watercolor pencils. I need to remember that I have those. Your watercoloring is fabulous!
I love that your beautifully colored sunflower is up against that embossed background. Looks like a sunflower against a wall in a garden. Many messages is on my wish list!
