Back to Basics – Card Making 101

I made this card this morning to share with you today and to provide a bit of back to basic card making tips.

Card basic 101

Standard card base is one piece of 8-1/2 x 11 cardstock cut in half on the long side at 5-1/2.  Score it at 4-1/4.  A standard layer on the card front would be 4 x 5-1/4, or 1/4″ shorter on each side.  For my card today, I cut a standard layer using whisper white then a piece of Designer Series Paper another 1/4″ shorter on each side or 3-3/4 x 5

When I was a new card maker I scoured the internet for tips and techniques to help me be creative.  I came across Connie Stewart at SimplySimpleStamping.com.  She had a technique she called Flash Cards and while I case her cards anymore, her tip for creating layers was a good one.

Cut a piece of cardstock into 8 pieces ea 2-3/4 x 4-1/4.  Cut the cardstock in half on the short side at 4-1/4 then on long side at 5-1/2 and then at 2-3/4.

If you do this for all of your cardstock, you’ll have ready made layers to use on a card.

Next cut a piece of whisper white to 8 pieces each 2-1/2 x 4.  Cut short side at 8″ then a 4″  Do not discard the 1/2 ” piece.  Cut the on the long side at 10″, 5″ and 2-1/2.

Remember that piece of whisper white I told you not to discard.  It is perfect for skinny sentiments like Hey, Lady! from Little Ladybug.  I layered mine on top of a piece of Granny Apple Green cardstock cut to 5/8 ” and then the length needed for the sentiment.

I honestly didn’t know what I was going to create when I sat down this morning.  I knew I wanted to share some basic card making and only chose Mellon Mambo because I have a ton of it and don’t use it enough.

Once I had the card basics done I figured I should finish it into something so grabbed Little ladybug.  I felt I needed something on the whisper white and found the splatter stamp from Label Me Bold was like it was made for the big flower.

Thank you for visiting today.  I always appreciate your comments and answer all questions as soon as possible.  Until next time…

Happy Stamping
Lynn
